As a Safe Harbour location and by displaying this logo, you are showing everyone your commitment to:

  • Equitable treatment of all your customers or clients;

To treating all of your clients and/or customers in an equitable manner. If a concern is expressed to you regarding a lack of equitable treatment a commitment to taking this concern seriously and to taking steps to address the problem.

  • Being a place of safety for people who are the targets of racism and hate;

To being a safe place where a community member who has experienced mistreatment can expect a helping hand. This assistance might include a place to sit, a telephone to use, or information on who can assist them.

  • Having prepared staff.

To having your key employees prepared to fulfill these commitments. This preparation, provided by the Safe Harbour Program, includes a short orientation to the program and employee responsibilities. It is also an opportunity for employees to gain information about diversity and the resources available in our community

The Safe Harbour Program, coordinated by the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies, is in more than 20 communities across British Columbia (www.safeharbour.ca). It was started in Nanaimo by the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and its community partners.

BC’s Ministry of Attorney General’s Welcoming Communities Strategy, through funding provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada under their Canadian Action Plan Against Racism.
